Whitehorse Circle to close Saturday for approximately two months

The Whitehorse Circle in Hamilton will close this Saturday for approximately two months as New Jersey Department of Transportation officials continue work to replace the circle with a modern roundabout.

NJDOT officials said the circle—located at the intersection of Route 206, South Broad Street and Whitehorse Avenue—will be shut down at 6 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9. Throughout the fall, NJDOT’s contractor South State Inc. will close and detour the circle in stages, although state officials said a series of temporary full closures is necessary to complete the project.

The $4.3 million federally-funded project will replace the current Whitehorse Circle with a modern roundabout, where all motorists yield to traffic in the circle. NJDOT officials said the new roundabout will utilize safer entry points and eliminate circle cut through lanes.

The Whitehorse Circle is known throughout the area as a difficult intersection to navigate, and statistics reflect the circle’s dangerous reputation. From 2013 to 2015, 138 crashes occurred near the circle, according to a NJ.com article.
