Bordentown Township Flag Retirement Ceremony

Bordentown Township recently held a solemn Flag Retirement Ceremony, offering the community an opportunity to honor the American flag in accordance with longstanding tradition.

When an American flag becomes too worn, torn, or weathered to be displayed, the United States Flag Code calls for it to be retired “in a dignified way.” The most traditional method is by burning, carried out with care and respect to symbolize the service the flag has given to the nation.

Mayor Eric Holliday, Deputy Mayor Eugene Fuzy, Committeewoman Kelly Lozito, and Committeewoman Aneka Miller joined residents in attending the ceremony. The event was led by the Township’s Veterans Advisory Committee, chaired by Bryan Branson, and supported by Boy Scout Troop 13 and Cub Scout Pack 65. Together, they ensured each flag was properly retired with the honor it deserves.

This annual tradition provides not only a respectful farewell for flags that have flown proudly over homes, schools, and public buildings, but also a moment for the community to reflect on the values the flag represents—freedom, sacrifice, and unity.

Bordentown Township extends sincere gratitude to the Veterans, Scouts, and community leaders who participated and helped preserve this meaningful tradition.
